Commission-Based Observer Newspaper Sales Position

The Jewish Federation of Greater Nashville (JFGN) is seeking a highly motivated professional to join our team as we secure the necessary resources to sustain and grow Jewish life throughout Greater Nashville.  

 

Who you are 

We are looking for an organized, efficient, and personable go-getter ready to embrace our goal of building a robust, connected and vibrant Jewish community in Greater Nashville. You should be someone who is exceptionally well organized, thinks critically, loves connecting with people, is an active listener, is strong at managing relationships, and understands how to cater to the needs and expectations of advertisers.  

 

What you’ll be doing  

The Observer is an award-winning, respected local Jewish newspaper, dedicated to serving the Jewish community of Nashville by providing timely news, informative content, and a platform for advertisers to reach an engaged audience. Current circulation is about 4,000 total households. The ad sales representative will be a central member of the Observer newspaper team, with particular focus on generating revenue for the publication through print and digital ad sales.  

 

Essential Job Functions 

  • Sales of print and online advertising of products and services to local and area businesses to meet the financial goals of the newspaper. 

  • Growing profitable long-term advertising relationships with current active advertisers, as well as developing new advertising relationships with potential clients. 

  • Build and maintain strong, long-lasting relationships with clients by understanding their unique advertising needs. 

  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and the unique needs of our readers to offer informed recommendations to potential advertisers. 

  • Achieve the advertising revenue goals of the newspaper on a consistent basis. 

  • Develop and present pitches to sell print and digital ads. 

  • Work in close contact with the newspaper’s editor and graphic designer to ensure accuracy and placement of ads. 

  • Work in close contact with the accounting department of the Jewish Federation of Greater Nashville to ensure outstanding balances are paid in a timely manner. 

 

Skills you’ll need:  

  • Self-motivated individual with the ability to work creatively and flexibly in a dynamic environment. 

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively as part of a team. 

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with proven ability to meet deadlines. 

  • Strong computer skills are necessary, specifically in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint). 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and a commitment to professionalism and collegiality including the ability to receive feedback and take action when appropriate. 

  • Strong copywriting and editing skills. 

  • Three years or more successful results in a sales position. 

  • Print and online media sales experience preferred but not required. 

  • While knowledge about the Jewish Federation is desirable, it is not a pre-requisite for this position.
